Terms of service
Last updated 7 October 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Tilak Kumar G, a sole proprietor trading as TurtleByte, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India ("we", "us"), covering the MailRules website and the hosted MailRules cloud service. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them.
1. Open-source software
The self-hosted MailRules software is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0). That license, not these terms, governs your use, copying and modification of the software. It is provided without warranty, as the license states. Companies that cannot accept the AGPL can buy a commercial license by emailing us.
2. Your account
You must be at least 18 and able to enter a binding contract. Keep your login secure, and tell us promptly if you think someone else has accessed your account. You are responsible for activity under your account.
3. What you allow us to do with your mailbox
When you connect a mailbox, you authorise MailRules to read incoming and existing messages, and to move, archive, flag, mark as junk, mark as read or unread, or move to Trash the messages your rules apply to. By default, "Trash" means a folder called MailRules Trash that your provider never empties automatically; you can switch this to your provider's own Trash in Settings. If you turn them on, it may also save draft replies to your Drafts folder and send notifications. MailRules never permanently deletes email and never sends email on your behalf. You confirm you have the right to grant this access for every mailbox you connect.
4. Automated decisions
MailRules uses rules you write and AI models to decide where email goes. These decisions can be wrong. Use dry-run, the Needs review queue and undo to check them, and do not rely on MailRules alone for email where a missed message could cause harm. You are responsible for the rules you create.
5. Acceptable use
Don't use MailRules to break the law, access mailboxes you aren't authorised to access, send spam, attack or overload the service, reverse-engineer the hosted service's protections, or resell the cloud service without our written agreement.
6. Plans, trials and billing
- Trial: new cloud accounts get 14 days free. We'll remind you before it ends, and nothing is charged unless you choose a plan.
- Billing: our order process is run by our online reseller Paddle.com, which is the Merchant of Record for all orders and handles customer service enquiries about payments and returns. Plans are billed monthly or yearly in advance, in US dollars or Indian rupees, and renew automatically until you cancel. Paddle adds taxes such as GST or VAT at checkout. Paddle's buyer terms also apply to your purchase.
- Limits: each plan includes a number of mailboxes and AI-sorted emails a month. When you reach the email limit, sorting by sender rules and conditions continues, and AI decisions pause until the next month, unless you upgrade or add your own model key.
- Price changes: we'll give at least 30 days' notice by email. Founding-member prices are kept for as long as your subscription stays active.
- Cancelling and refunds: cancel any time in Settings, and you keep access until the end of the paid period. Yearly plans can be refunded in full within 14 days of the first charge; Paddle processes refunds. Otherwise payments are non-refundable, except where the law requires.
7. Your data
You own your email, rules and other content. You give us permission to process it only to provide the service, as described in our privacy policy. You can export your rules at any time. After you close your account, we delete your data within 30 days.
8. Service changes and availability
We work to keep the service available, but we don't promise it will be uninterrupted. We may change or discontinue features. If we discontinue the cloud service, we'll give at least 60 days' notice and a pro-rated refund of any prepaid amount, and you can keep running MailRules yourself with the open-source version.
9. Suspension and termination
We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms or put the service or other users at risk. Where possible, we'll warn you first and give you a chance to fix the problem.
10. Disclaimers and liability
To the extent the law allows, the service is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind. Neither party is liable for indirect or consequential losses, including lost data, profits or business. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
11. Indemnity
You agree to cover our reasonable costs from claims arising from your misuse of the service or from connecting a mailbox you weren't authorised to connect.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India. The courts in Bengaluru, Karnataka have exclusive jurisdiction, except where consumer law gives you the right to bring a claim where you live.
13. Changes to these terms
We'll email you at least 14 days before a material change takes effect. If you keep using the service after that, the new terms apply. If you don't agree, you can cancel before they take effect.
